Robert Mitchum

Robert Mitchum, who won early fame as an in- fantry lieutenant in “The Story of G. I. Joe,” more recently starred in “The Longest Day,” the story of the D-Day invasion of France. Now, in “Anzio,” Dino de Laurentiis’ epic drama of another World War II imvasion, at the ........ Theatre, Mitchum appears as a cynical, veteran war correspondent, “Anzio” is a Columbia Pictures release in Panavi- sion and Technicolor, directed by Edward Dmytryk.

In 1942, Mitchum joined California’s Long Beach Theatre Guild, appearing in such plays as “Rebound,” “Remember the Day” and “The Petrified Forest.” This led to his first motion picture role, that of a rough, unshaven heavy in a “Hopalong Cassidy” film.

After nine Cassidy films, Mitchum appeared in “We’ve Never Been Licked” followed by ‘Corvette K-225,” “Gung Ho” and “Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo.” Then followed such other major films as “Crossfire,” “Rachel and the Stranger” and “Blood on the Moon.”

Other important films in which Mitchum appeared include “Not as a Stranger,” “Fire Down Below,” “The Way West,” “The Enemy Below,” “Two for the Seesaw” and “What a Way to Go!”

“Anzio” co-stars Peter Falk, Earl Holliman, Mark Damon, Reni Santoni, Thomas Hunter, Anthony Steel and Wayde Preston with Arthur Kennedy and special guest star Robert Ryan as General Carson.

Robert Ryan QQ QQ OLLI

Robert Ryan is a gentle man, but his commanding height and rough-hewn features make him the cast- ing director’s ideal military officer or other per- sonification of force and violence. So it comes as no surprise that Ryan has portrayed a general in three recent large-scale film re-enactments of important World War II battles. The latest of these is Dino de Laurentiis’ production of “Anzio,” starring Robert Mitchum, at the... Theatre in Panavision and Technicolor.

In the new Columbia Pictures release, as special guest star, Ryan plays General Carson, commander of the American Fifth Army, whose Anzio beach- head campaign was meant to break an Italian war theatre stalemate. Instead, it dwindled into an inter- minable and bloody siege.

Prior to “Anzio,” Ryan portrayed a general in “Battle of the Bulge,” in which the Germans made a last-gasp attempt to break through the American lines in the Ardennes. In “The Longest Day,’ Ryan played another military figure.

Thomas Hunter QLOQLQL LOL LL LLL OLE Thomas Hunter, whose first important Hollywood picture was “What Did You Do in the War, Daddy ?”, co-stars with Robert Mitchum in Dino de Laurentiis’ spectacular war drama, “Anzio,” now at the ...... Hunter plays a Ranger radio operator in the battle spectacular which deals with the bloody four-month combat that followed the Anzio beachhead during World War II, before the Allies could move on to Rome.

Anthony Steel, the noted British actor, co-stars with Robert Mitchum in Dino de Laurentiis’ epic war drama, “Anzio,” now at the ........ Theatre. In the Columbia Pictures release filmed in Panavi- sion and Technicolor, Steel portrays General Marsh, commander of the vaunted British First Division, part of the Allied force that participated in the bloody action at Anzio where the end of World War II began, according to some sources.

Also co-starred in the Dino de Laurentiis pro- duction, directed by Edward Dmytryk, are Peter Falk, Earl Holliman, Mark Damon, Reni Santoni, Thomas Hunter and Wayde Preston with Arthur Kennedy and special guest star Robert Ryan as General Carson.

Harry A. L. Craig wrote the “Anzio” screenplay from the book by Wynford Vaughan-Thomas.

Arthur Kennedy

Not all generals attain martial glory. Some are unequal to the exigencies of combat and wind up war’s victim rather than its victor. Distinguished actor Arthur Kennedy portrays one of the defeated military figures of World War II in Dino de Lauren- tiis’ “Anzio,” spectacular new war epic at the...... Theatre. Starring Robert Mitchum, the Columbia Pictures release was directed by Edward Dmytryk in Panavision and Technicolor.

As General Lesly, fictitious commander of the Anzio forces, Kennedy cautiously orders his men to dig in after the surprise landings, instead of storm- ing inland along the unopposed, wide-open road to Rome explored by Mitchum, who plays a war corre- spondent in the film.

One of the most versatile stars in motion pictures and the theatre, five-time Academy Award nominee Arthur Kennedy won the first of his nominations in 1952 for his portrayal of a blind ex-serviceman in “Bright Victor.” His other nominations were for performances in “Trial,” “Peyton Place,’ “Some Came Running” and “Elmer Gantry.”

Co-starred with Mitchum in “Anzio,” besides Ken- nedy, are Peter Falk, Earl Holliman, Mark Damon, Reni Santoni, Thomas Hunter, Anthony Steel and Wayde Preston with special guest star Robert Ryan as General Carson.

Harry A. L. Craig penned the “Anzio” screenplay from a book by Wynford Vaughan-Thomas.

Mark Damon

A motion picture re-enactment of the Allied land- ings at Anzio in World War II led to only one serious casualty ... and that happened to co-star Mark Damon during the filming of a boisterous pre-inva- sion party scene. Damon fractured his fifth verte- bra while enthusiastically portraying an American Ranger on the eve of action, and “Anzio” director Edward Dmytryk had to shoot around him until he recovered.

“Anzio,” a Dino de Laurentiis production for Co- lumbia Pictures release at the ...... Theatre in Panavision and Technicolor, stars Robert Mitchum and also co-stars Peter Falk, Earl Holliman, Reni Santoni, Thomas Hunter, Anthony Steel and Wayde Preston with Arthur Kennedy and special guest star Robert Ryan as General Carson.

Damon was a California stage director when, one day, his leading man became ill and he assumed the role himself. He was seen by a Hollywood talent scout and has been an actor ever since.

Ortolani’s theme song from “Mondo Cane” was recorded in 400 versions by leading artists through- out the world and has sold more than 20 million records. He has also received two Golden Globe awards, for his music in “The Yellow Rolls Royce” and his song, “Forget Domani.”

A Columbia Pictures release, “Anzio” co-stars Peter Falk, Earl Holliman, Mark Damon, Thomas Hunter, Anthony Steel, Reni Santoni and Wayde Preston with Arthur Kennedy and special guest star Robert Ryan as General Carson.

Earl Holliman

A butch haircut was the instrument that led to Earl Holliman’s motion picture stardom. Currently, Holliman co-stars with Robert Mitchum in Dino de Laurentiis’ gigantic war drama, “Anzio,” now at the : ee hirer a Theatre in Panavision and Technicolor. The Columbia Pictures release was directed by Ed- ward Dmytryk.

Earl had just finished his first movie role, a bit part, in the Jerry Lewis comedy “Scared Stiff.” He ran into a casting director who was casting “The Girls of Pleasure Island,” a story of 1500 Marines and three girls. Earl became one of the Marines, but only on condition that he get the regulation GI hair- cut. In “Anzio,” he plays a war-wise Ranger sergeant.

“The butch haircut,” Holliman says, “was my lucky break. With my big ears, long chin and broken nose, I suddenly had a very funny face and from that moment on I was a character actor.”

Also co-starred in “Anzio” are Peter Falk, Mark Damon, Reni Santoni, Thomas Hunter, Anthony Steel and Wayde Preston with Arthur Kennedy and special guest star Robert Ryan as General Carson.

Reni Santoni

Reni Santoni, who made his motion picture debut as a stagestruck youth in the Carl Reiner comedy, “Enter Laughing,” has a more dramatic role in his second film, “Anzio,” the Columbia Pictures release starring Robert Mitchum at the ......... Theatre. Edward Dmytryk directed the Dino de Laurentiis’ production in Panavision and Technicolor.

In “Anzio,” Santoni portrays a tough American Ranger who participates in the bloody fighting at the Anzio beachhead during World War II. Santoni still manages to maintain a tenuous connecting thread with show business even if his “Anzio” role is that of a soldier. He is called Movie in the war drama because he is always giving his impressions of film stars.

Also co-starred in “Anzio” are Peter Falk, Earl Holliman, Mark Damon, Thomas Hunter, Anthony Steel and Wayde Preston with Arthur Kennedy. Rob- ert Ryan is a special guest star in “Anzio” as General Carson.

Peter Falk specializes in the classics on stage, and in comedy or action on the screen. He started his motion picture career in 1960 as a gang lord in “Murder, Inc.”, and he has another violent role in Dino de Laurentiis’ spectacular war drama, “Anzio,” starring Robert Mitchum at the ....... Theatre. The Columbia Pictures release in Panavision and Technicolor, directed by Edward Dmytryk, co-stars Falk as a danger-hunting Canadian commando.

After college in New York and Wisconsin and an M.A. degree in public administration, Peter took a job as an efficiency expert in Hartford., Conn., where he moonlighted as an actor in a local stock company. Eva Le Gallienne encouraged him and he quit his job to turn full time to the theatre.

After studying with Miss Le Gallienne, he entered the off-Broadway theatre, scoring a hit as the bar- tender in Eugene O’Neill’s “The Iceman Cometh.” Peter’s next hit was in “St. Joan,” also off-Broadway. On Broadway, he again starred in “St. Joan,” “The Passion of Josef D” and other plays.

Since “Murder, Inc.,” his films have included “A Pocketful of Miracles,” “Robin and the 7 Hoods,” “Tt’s a Mad, Mad, Mad World” and “Luv.”

One of the most distinguished of England's fine crop of stage stars with Robert Mitchum in the Columbia Pictures release, ‘Anzio,’ in Panavision and Technicolor, is Patrick Magee as a general who wants to move his men forward to immediate liberation of Rome after the Anzio landings.

Instead, German general Kesselring was given time to move 40,000 German troops to the Anzio front. Thus began the bloody four-month siege that cost 6000 Allied lives.

Robert Mitchum, who went to Rome to star in Dino de Laurentiis’ epic war drama, “Anzio,” Columbia Pictures re- lease in Panavision and Technicolor, tells of the time he did a night's shooting on location and then retired to his beach hotel near Anzio at 8 in the morning. After putting up a “Non Disturbare” sign at his door, he went to bed,

“As soon as I hit the sack,” he said, “someone began pounding on the door.” It turned out to be the maid.

“Signor Mitchum,” she said affectionately in Italian, ‘you can sleep late today. I saw the sign.”

Since it wasn't in the script, director Edward Dmytryk rele- gated to the cutting room floor his first ‘take’ of the landing scene in Dino de Laurentiis’ epic war drama starring Robert Mitchum and a large cast. The scene showed 6-foot-4 Wayde Preston, followed by other American Rangers and war corre- spondent Mitchum, leaping out of a landing craft as the bow opened. Preston fell head over heels into the sea. Dmytryk had no comment to offer, but Mitchum did.

“Well,” said Mitchum as he helped the thoroughly soaked co-star, ‘‘you sure made a big splash in that scene.”

Movie-making is truly international as is proved by the new-film offer Robert Mitchum received while starring in Dino de Laurentiis’ “Anzio,” Columbia Pictures release in Panavision and Technicolor.

Edward Dmyiryk cut into Rome's ‘‘capelloni’ popula- tion while filming Dino de Laurentiis’ epic war drama, “Anzio,” the Columbia Pictures release in Panavision and Technicolor.

“Capelloni” is the Italian word for those young people who effect Beatle-style haircuts.

The director had issued a casting call for several hundred extras to appear as American and British soldiers in battle scenes. Among the applicants who showed up were about 80 capelloni. Dmytryk offered them a week's work, but only if they would permit studio barbers to give them G.I. haircuts. Some 50 agreed. But the others preferred not to part with their cherished locks.
